CANADIAN-CHILEAN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
In April, I was in Santiago where I had the privilege of meeting with Katie Turcco, Manager of the Canadian- Chilean Chamber of Commerce. Katie, who previously worked for the Canadian Embassy in Santiago, has been Manager the Chamber for the past 8 years. With Canadian investment in the order of $US 12,000 MM, Canada is the third largest international investor in Chile after the United States and Spain. The Canadian-Chilean Chamber of Commerce, which was founded in 1992, is very active with over 125 members. Most investment is focused in the mining industry. However, Canada also has a significant presence in the banking, electricity, gas and water, services, fisheries, telecommunications and construction, sectors. Members include Placer Dome, Noranda, Falconbridge, Baker & Mackenzie, Methanex, Hydro-Quebec, SNC Lavalin, Air Canada, Finning, Scotia Bank, Collahuasi, Quebecor World and Our Resources. The Chamber has recently published a book entitled Corporate Responsibility of Canadian Companies in Chile. This extraordinary 36 page publication examines the social impact of Canadian investment in Chile and evaluates the role of Canadian companies in creating good jobs for Chileans, investing in employee productivity, improving Chiles education system, and re-enforcing local communities. A copy is on file in the Chamber offices and is available on the Chamber website . The publication is written in Spanish, English and French
